Want to pursue higher studies in Belgium? Scholarships are up for grabs until Sept. 19

It's time for new opportunities!

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Manila announced that the European country's Academy for Research and Higher Education (ARES) is offering scholarships to students from developing countries, including the Philippines.

There are three types of scholarships: a one-year bachelor's, a one-year master's degree in specialization, or a continuing education program of between two and six months at an establishment in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

The programs being offered are the following:

Specialized bachelor's degree
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Data Analysis
Specialized master's degree
  • Master's Degree in Human Rights 
  • Master's Degree in Risk and Disaster Management in the Anthropocene Era 
  • Master's Degree in Integrated Health Risk Management 
  • Specialized Master's in International and Development Economics 
  • Advanced Master's in Microfinance 
  • Specialized Master's in Public Health Methodology 
  • Master of Science in Public Health – Analysis and Evaluation of International Health Policies, Programs, and Systems 
  • Master's Degree in Transport and Logistics 
  • Specialized Master's Degree in Social Innovation Design 
  • Master's Degree in Water-Energy-Food Nexus
Continuing education courses
  • University Certificate in Data Science for Global Health 
  • International Training in Digital University Pedagogy 
  • Interuniversity and Interdisciplinary Certificate in Transitional Justice 
  • Continuing Education in Understanding and Managing the Human Dimensions of Sustainable Development Change Projects 
  • Continuing Education in Quality Assurance and Quality Control of Medicines and Health Products 
  • Continuing Education in Free Geographic Information Systems

The candidate must be a permanent resident and must be working in Belgium's 31 designated countries. Palestinian nationals, it noted, are eligible even if they don't reside in such countries.

The designated countries include the following:

  • Africa – South Africa, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Uganda, DR Congo, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia, Zimbabwe
  • South America and the Caribbean – Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti, Peru
  • Southeast Asia  – Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Vietnam

Applicants must also have the appropriate diploma. For specialized master's and continuing education, they must have a diploma comparable to a 2nd cycle diploma or 300 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System credits, a standardized system for quantifying and transferring academic credits in higher education across Europe, from a Belgian university.

Specialist bachelors, meanwhile, must have a diploma comparable to a 1st cycle diploma or 180 ECTS credits.

They must also provide proof of a relevant professional occupation of at least two years in the country they're in.

The scholarship includes international travel expenses, living allowance, exceptional fees related to visa applications (for bachelor's and specialized master's degrees), registration fees (for bachelor's and specialized master's students), indirect mission costs (for continuing education), and insurance costs.

Hopefuls may submit their applications via the GIRAF platform.

Deadline for applications is on Sept. 19, Friday, 6 p.m. (Philippine time).
