Alex Eala, Eva Lys exit Wimbledon doubles
Alex Eala's historic journey in the Wimbledon women's doubles concluded on Thursday, July 3, as she and German partner Eva Lys were defeated in the first round.
Eala and Lys faced Brazil's Ingrid Martins and USA's Quinn Gleason. While the Filipino-German pair showed promise early in the match, they ultimately succumbed to their opponents, 4-6, 2-6.
In the first set, Eala and Lys fought back, narrowing their opponents' lead to 5-4. However, they were unable to convert a crucial break point, leading to errors that handed their opponents the set.
Eala and Lys won the first game of the second set, but Martins and Gleason then took five games in a row, building a big lead. Though Eala and Lys managed to win one more game, Martins and Gleason quickly closed out the match.
This was just days after Eala's singles run ended against Czech defending champion Barbora Krejcikova. She made history as the first Filipino in the Open Era to compete in the singles main draw.
Lys also experienced an early singles departure, losing in the second round to Linda Noskova.
