Tricia Robredo suffers from bone stress injuries on both legs
Tricia Robredo, the daughter of former vice president Leni Robredo, revealed that she suffered from injuries on both of her legs due to stress.
On her Instagram account, the physician and recreational runner posted pictures of her medical scans on her legs, which showed "Grade 3 bone stress injuries" on both of her legs. Another scan also revealed low bone density for age, and some tests flagged other "derangements."
"I was both amused and horrified to learn I ran a marathon in that state, but mostly grateful it wasn’t worse," Tricia said.
"It’s been eight weeks since I stopped running. I thought I’d be cleared to return slowly by now, but my ortho thinks it’s best to be a bit more patient," she added.
Tricia said that they also needed to address her "history of disordered eating and compensatory over-exercising" that was aggravated by "overtraining, underfueling, and underrecovering this past year."
"I genuinely tried to prevent this and thought I was doing things right. I followed the plan, but my obsession with personal records blurred the line between discipline and going overboard," she said.
"I ate more, but recurring restrictive habits tricked me into thinking it was enough. I slept more, but training cycles always overlapped with stressful periods, affecting recovery and wearing my body down further. Eventually, it gave out," Tricia continued.
Tricia said there were warning signs she wished she hadn’t ignored or missed. "Being sidelined this long sucks. An outlet would’ve been helpful, especially during these crazy times, but stepping back made me realize how toxic it had all become."
She advised, "It’s common for injured athletes to say they’ll come back stronger. I just want to come back.. more balanced and reasonable lol so I can keep running til I’m old and gray! So to fellow recreational runners with similar tendencies—goals are great until they’re not. Chill out, it shouldn’t be that serious."
Tricia previously participated in her first-ever full marathon in New York City in November last year. At the time, Leni shared that her daughter suffered from a "complicated injury" that required her to undergo physical therapy every so often. However, she still wanted to try the race.
