Budget carrier AirAsia reminded passengers that vaping and smoking on board are strictly prohibited.

The reminder came as guests were caught violating the policy despite numerous placarded advisories and public announcements in place since January, the airline said.

Based on the report from its security department, there were 10 incidents in which guests were vaping mid-flight, either inside lavatories that triggered smoke detectors or openly in their seats.

The acts didn't only violate the airline policy but also the law, namely the Tobacco Regulation Act and the Vape Regulation Act, which ban vaping in public transport, including planes.

The airline reminded passengers that those caught vaping will be reported to airport police upon arrival at the destination, with blotter entry, and may be slapped with a fine of up to P5,000. Charges may also be filed under the Civil Aviation Authority Act if safety is compromised.

Administrative sanctions, meanwhile, may include a lifetime ban from all AirAsia flights.

The airline assured the public that it has a visible and consistent no-smoking policy from the boarding gate to the aircraft cabin.

Clear reminders are displayed on boarding passes, in pre-flight announcements, and on illuminated signage throughout the flight.

Additionally, lavatories are equipped with tamper-proof smoke detectors, and cabin crew remain vigilant in monitoring passenger activity.

While it noted that its team is highly trained, the airline asked the public to cooperate and show commitment to ensure safety is never compromised during flights.
