From a simple idea cooked up in a college dorm room to a company that now touches nearly every corner of the globe as Meta, there's still so much more to tell about Facebook, according to writer Aaron Sorkin.

The Social Network, the 2010 movie about Facebook, pulled in $226 million across the globe and earned eight Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Picture.

Fifteen years later, Sorkin wants to continue to tell Facebook's story, depicting how the platform has changed and influenced the world in the ever-evolving era of social media.

Here's what we know so far about The Social Network II:

What it's about

The upcoming film will reportedly be based on "The Facebook Files," a 2021 Wall Street Journal investigative series that exposed the company's alleged role in platform-related harms.

Writer Sorkin had long expressed interest in a sequel and said to have found his angle after the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack, believing Facebook played a part.

Sources, however, emphasized that the film won't solely focus on that event or the 2020 election, but also "Facebook’s effect on teens, preteens, violence, and countries outside the U.S."

Its introduction read: “Facebook Inc. knows, in acute detail, that its platforms are riddled with flaws that cause harm, often in ways only the company fully understands. That is the central finding of a Wall Street Journal series, based on a review of internal Facebook documents, including research reports, online employee discussions and drafts of presentations to senior management.”

The cast

As of now, no official casting details have been released, leaving it uncertain whether any of the original actors, including Jesse Eisenberg—who is well-known for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg—will reprise their roles or which new faces might join the project.

The original movie also included Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer, Rooney Mara, Dakota Johnson, and Brenda Song.

The production team

Sorkin will assume directing duties from David Fincher for this project. His recent directorial credits include Molly's Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being the Ricardos.

The film is being developed by producers Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin, and Stuart Besser.

Release date

With casting reportedly in progress, neither a production start nor a release date has been scheduled, Deadline reported.
