LIST: Senate committee chairmanships for the 20th Congress

The Senate has announced the initial list of chairpersons for different committees for the 20th Congress.

The chairmanships started to be made official during the plenary session on July 29 after the first regular session. More were announced the following day, July 30, and on Aug. 4.

Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano has the most chairmanships with four, followed by Senators Pia Cayetano, Bong Go, Imee Marcos, and Robin Padilla with three each.

  • Rules
    Chairperson: Joel Villanueva
    Jurisdiction: Calendar, parliamentary rules and order and manner of transacting business and creation of committees
  • Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations Committee
    Chairperson: Sen. Rodante Marcoleta
    Jurisdiction: A.k.a. the Blue Ribbon Committee. Investigates the wrongdoing of officers, employees of the government
  • Accounts Committee
    Chairperson: Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano
    Jurisdiction: Auditing and adjustment of all accounts chargeable against the funds for the expenses and activities of the Senate
  • Agriculture, Food and Agrarian Reform Committee
    Chairperson: Sen. Kiko Pangilinan
    Jurisdiction: Agriculture, food production, agri-business, land restates, and implementation of agrarian land reform provisions of the Constitution
  • Banks, Financial Institutions and Currencies
    Chairperson: Alan Peter Cayetano
    Jurisdiction: Government and private currencies, capital markets, mutual funds, coinage and circulation of money
  • Basic Education Committee
    Chairperson: Sen. Bam Aquino
    Jurisdiction: Early childhood care and education, pre-school to secondary education, science and sports high schools, teachers and students welfare, scholarships, grants, subsidies, national language, establishment and maintenance of libraries

    Jurisdiction: Status of officers and employees of the government, their appointment, discipline, retirement, compensation, benefits, labor rights, and reorganization of the government or any of its branches or instrumentalities

    Jurisdiction: Proposals amending the Constitution and the revision of the existing codes
  • Cooperatives Committee

    Jurisdiction: Promotion of the youth's role in nation-building, their wellbeing, and inculcation of patriotism and nationalism

The following committee has yet to have assigned chairpersons:

  • Ethics and Privileges
    Jurisdiction: Conduct, rights, privileges, safety, dignity, and reputation of the Senate and its members

During the opening of the first regular session on July 28, Sen. Chiz Escudero was re-elected as Senate President with 19 votes, defeating Sen. Tito Sotto, who garnered 5 votes.

Among those who supported Escudero were Senators Joel Villanueva, Sherwin Gatchalian, JV Ejercito, Jinggoy Estrada, Alan Peter Cayetano, Pia Cayetano, Bong Go, Bato dela Rosa, Lito Lapid, Robin Padilla, Imee Marcos, Mark Villar, Camille Villar, Rodante Marcoleta, Raffy Tulfo, Erwin Tulfo, and Tito Sotto III.

Meanwhile, Sotto received votes from Escudero, Ping Lacson, Loren Legarda, Migz Zubiri, and Risa Hontiveros.
