WATCH: Epic adventures, test of friendship teased in 'Wicked: For Good' trailer
The trailer for Wicked: For Good is finally here, giving fans their first glimpse of Elphaba and Glinda's continuing journey.
In the nearly three-minute trailer released by Universal Pictures on Thursday, June 5, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) goes into hiding while Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) and The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) are hunting her.
"The Wicked Witch can't elude us forever, not with Prince Fiyero and his squadron hot on her trail," Yeoh's character says in the background.
The trailer also showed the appearance of Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion from the 1939 film, with The Wizard ordering them to "Bring me the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West."
Amid the chaos and test of power, the trailer also teased the deepening the friendship between Glinda and Elphaba.
"Think of what we can do together," Glinda tells Elphaba.
Per the Variety report, the official logline of the second film will be “set in the Land of Oz, before and after Dorothy Gale’s arrival from Kansas," which will “cover the events of the musical’s second act, following Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship being put to the test as they embrace their new respective identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the North, and how the consequences of their actions will change all of Oz forever.”
Helmed by Jon M. Chu, the movie adaptation of the famous stage musical will tell the story of the witches of Oz. It centers on Elphaba, a young woman with unusual green skin who has yet to discover her true power, and Glinda, who is popular and gilded by privilege and ambition but has yet to discover her true heart.
After meeting as students at Shiz University, Elphaba and Glinda unexpectedly form a close bond. Their friendship, however, gets tested after an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, even as their lives take very different paths.
The first part of the film, released in 2024, has grossed over $756 million (over P42 billion) worldwide since its release. It also earned nods from prestigious award-giving bodies, including the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards, and Oscars with 10 nominations.
