Ellen DeGeneres says life 'is just better' in the UK after moving because of Trump's re-election

Ellen DeGeneres revealed that she and her wife Portia de Rossi, relocated to the United Kingdom, a move she openly attributes to Donald Trump's re-election as US president.

The TV host made her first public appearance since her move at an event in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

"We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in'," she said in an on-stage conversation with UK host Ricard Bacon, as per the BBC

"And we're like, 'We're staying here,'" the TV host added.

The former Ellen Show host then said that life in the UK is "better" than in the US.

"It's absolutely beautiful," she said. "We're just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture—everything you see is charming, and it's just a simpler way of life."

She continued, "It's clean. Everything here is just better—the way animals are treated, and people are polite. I just love it here."

The Finding Dory, a known opposer of Trump, also voiced her concerns over the Southern Baptist Convention endorsing the reversal of a Supreme Court case allowing same-sex marriage.

"They're trying to literally stop it (same sex-marriage) from happening in the future and possibly reverse it," Ellen said, adding that she and Portia are considering getting married in the UK.

"I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences. So until we're there, I think there's a hard place to say we have huge progress," she continued.

According to BBC News, Ellen and Portia initially envisioned spending three or four months a year in the UK, even purchasing what they believed would be "a part-time house."

In November 2024, local reports stated that the couple left the United States to reside in rural England.

Multiple media outlets, including TMZ, E! News, and The Wrap, said a source close to the pair stated that Ellen and Portia put their Montecito estate up for sale and plan to "never return" to the US, with Trump serving as president.

On toxic workplace allegations

During her recent public appearance, Ellen also addressed allegations that her show, which ran for 19 seasons, was a torrid place to work. She also talked about how she was dubbed "mean" in the press.

"It's as simple as, I'm a direct person and I'm very blunt, and I guess that means that I'm mean," she said.

"I don't think I can say anything that's ever going to get rid of that [reputation] or dispel it, which is hurtful to me. I hate it. I hate that people think that I'm that because I know who I am and I know that I'm an empathetic, compassionate person."

Former staffers claimed that her show tolerated bullying, racial discrimination, and sexual harassment.

Trump reclaimed the highest position in the US government after getting the 270 electoral votes he needed to beat his Democratic rival Kamala Harris. He previously lost in 2020 against outgoing president Joe Biden.
