Majority of Filipinos want government to lower food prices, raise wages—survey

A public opinion research firm found that a majority of Filipinos surveyed want the government to lower food prices and increase wages.

In the latest issue of their Philippine Public Opinion Monitor report, WR Numero Uno surveyed 1,418 Filipino adults on the policy areas they considered most important for the government to prioritize.

The respondents placed the highest importance on lowering the price of food and other essentials at 42%. This was followed closely by raising the salary of workers by 39%. 

Tackling illegal drugs and crime and addressing poverty came next, tied at 29%, and the creation of more jobs and livelihood opportunities is also seen as a major priority at 28%.

With corruption a growing topic due to issues like anomalous flood control projects, the survey found that 23% of respondents also see combating it as a key issue to address.

Other top policy priorities that Filipinos want the government to address include:

  • Resolving the education crisis- 16%
  • Reducing taxes and government fees- 16%
  • Reinstating PhilHealth subsidy- 14%
  • Strengthening courts and the justice system in the country- 8%
  • Resisting China’s interference in the West Philippine Sea- 7%
  • Dissemination of the Comprehensive Sexual Education to the youth- 6%
  • Ensuring a fair impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte- 6%
  • Strengthening of the military for national defense- 5%
  • Regulating political dynasties- 3%
  • Legalizing same-sex marriage- 2%
  • Passing divorce into law- 2%

On the performance of government officials, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.’s satisfaction rating increased to 35% from 29% in April, but 32% of Filipinos were still dissatisfied with his performance.

Vice President Sara Duterte’s performance satisfaction rating, meanwhile, dipped to 47% from 50% in April.

Among government institutions, the Senate’s satisfaction improves to 49% satisfaction, while the House of Representatives falls to 44%.
