Teddy Corpuz shares why he and his wife got married after only two weeks of being together

Teddy Corpuz, the frontman of OPM band Rocksteddy, revealed that he married his wife Jasmin just two weeks after being in a relationship.

In an interview with Karen Davila, the singer and TV host said he's not into dating around and prefers settling down immediately as much as possible.

"For me kasi, noong nameet ko 'yung wife ko, alam n'yo 'yun, parang kung sino 'yung mameet ko, gusto ko siya na 'yung papakasalan ko," he said. "Kung sino 'yung ma-meet ko, doon (marriage) ko siya gustong papunta na. Ayaw ko 'yung parang testing the waters or ganyan."

Corpuz recalled their love story, which he often tells to their daughter Phoebe.

He said he first met Jasmin during the birthday party of Rocksteddy's former guitarist, who happened to be her classmate.

"Alam mo, noong nakita ko 'yung mom mo, noong pumasok siya sa gate, naggoglow talaga siya," he recalled telling his daughter. "Pagpasok nila noong mga friends niya, siguro mga apat or tatlo sila, siya lang 'yung parang nagogglow doon, tapos parang, 'Uy, sino 'yun?"

He remembered viewing Jasmin's profile on Friendster, but wasn't attracted to her then.

Seeing her in the flesh, however, made him feel love at first sight.

"Mas maganda siya in person," he said, adding that he's confident in asking her out and didn't fear rejection. "Feeling ko kapag niligawan ko ito, sasagot ito ng yes."

As the only one with a car at the time, he offered to escort his bandmates as well as Jasmin and her friends to their respective houses. But he made sure that he'd escort Jasmin last so they could be alone together.

Corpuz said he also asked for the phone numbers of Jasmin's friends except her, prompting her to ask why.

Upon getting home, Corpuz texted her, saying he wanted to give her a friendly kiss on the cheek but supposedly felt shy.

Later on, he said he was surprised that Jasmin replied, "Bakit hindi mo ginawa?"

Corpuz flirted with her, saying that he would do it if she would ask him to visit her house.

Jasmin, who was also into him, replied, "Go."

Driving from Lagro to Batasan, he arrived at Jasmine's residence at 5 a.m. She gave her a kiss on the cheek, but teased her that he did not come all the way from Lagro just for that. They kissed on the lips and became a couple.

Amid the whirlwind romance, Corpuz noted that it may or may not work. "Pero ako, wala talaga akong fear," he said.

Getting married

But a week after becoming official, Corpuz said Jasmin admitted to her departure for the United States to obtain a so-called fiancé visa, in which she'd marry a US citizen and apply for a green card or permanent residency there.

Corpuz gave Jasmin an ultimatum: They either have to delete each other's numbers and never meet again, or she has to stay with him and never go to the US.

"Tapos sabi niya, 'Sa 'yo ako sasama.' May drama pa kami noon sa kotse, parang pelikula," he said.

To make things more complicated, Corpuz said Jasmin's mother learned about their relationship and kept her at home, locking their gate. Since he was at a gig at the time, he told her to pack her things.

"'Pupunta ako sa inyo, magtatanan tayo. After gig, susunduin kita,'" he recalled telling her. "After gig, kasama ko 'yung bandmates ko, kasi isang kotse lang kami, so sinundo namin siya."

Corpuz recalled him and his bandmates lifting Jasmin's luggage over the gate before eloping.

After a week, Corpuz asked Jasmin if she wanted to get married for fear of separation.

"One night sinabi ko, 'Gusto mo magpakasal na tayo? Kasi feeling ko 'pag bumalik ka sa inyo, ilalayo ka lang ng parents mo sa akin. Para at least, pagdating natin sa inyo, kasal na tayo, wala na siyang (mother) magagawa,'" he said.

They got married and secured their marriage certificate for about 10 days before going back to Jasmin's residence.

He presented a photocopy to Jasmin's mother for fear of the original one getting torn in front of them.

'Totoo ba 'to?' Usap konti, ganyan. 'Hindi ako approve,' sabi nung mom niya, 'pero andiyan na 'yan,'" he said.

Corpuz recalled getting stereotyped as the rockstar who's into alcohol, womanizing, and illegal drugs. They even initially thought that he had tattoos. Later on, he was able to prove them wrong.

Davila asked Corpuz if he thinks God had a hand in his marriage to Jasmin and responded, "I think so. Kasi ano, pinagpray ko rin 'yun. Feeling ko lang, ang binigay na word sa akin ni God, 'Kung sino 'yung gusto mo, ibibigay ko sa 'yo.'"

Corpuz and Jasmin are now a happy family with two children. Their favorite pastime is going camping.

"Hindi ko akalain na mayroong ganito," he said.
