Hyun Bin wants to crash land on a beautiful Philippine island

Published Aug 13, 2025 5:00 am

Wildly popular and respected Korean actor Hyun Bin has now set his sights on the Philippines and wishes to explore. “As far as I know, the Philippines has over 7,000 islands. I think it will be great to visit one of the most beautiful of islands among them.”

He also wants to learn more about the local culture. For him, one way of doing this is by going to public markets. “I usually try to go out and visit local markets and places like that.” The handsome star adds, “If I get the chance, I love to explore local markets. They often have so many delicious food to try as well.” And speaking of food, he has already tried adobo, which he found delicious. Next on his radar is crispy pata.

When Solaire Resort announced it was bringing the Korean superstar to Manila for the first time, the news spread like wildfire among K-drama devotees. On Aug. 8, the anticipation reached its peak as the actor behind some of the most memorable characters in Korean entertainment, such as My Lovely Sam Soon, Secret Garden, Memories of the Alhambra, the global phenomenon Crash Landing on You, and the recent historical drama Harbin, arrived at Solaire Resort for a media presentation and a meet and greet that left the property buzzing with excitement.

Hyun Bin, our crush who was mobbed when he crashlanded on our shores: “Yes, I did go out in public once, disguised as an old man. So no one realized that it was me.”

The reaction when Hyun Bin walked into the press conference was instant: gasps, audible “ang guapo!” remarks, and a collective sigh when he flashed his trademark dimpled smile. Dignified but approachable, he spoke in Korean and some English, his voice calm yet assured, his presence fully engaged with the moment. He posed for photos, came down from the stage to take a group shot with the media, and even shook hands with those in the front row—a small but telling gesture of warmth.

Hyun Bin praised Solaire’s luxury, attention to detail, and stunning Manila Bay views, calling his suite a “private, relaxing space.”

A fan connection like no other

Before the evening’s meet and greet at Solaire Theater, the atmosphere outside was electric. Fans carried banners, wore “Captain Ri” shirts, and took selfies in front of the many Hyun Bin standees and posters.

“Ang guapo!” the audience shouted during the press conference at Solaire Resort.

The event itself was a spectacle with laser lights, fog effects, and a dramatic entrance by Hyun Bin through a tunnel-like set. It was hosted by well-loved singer and entertainer Martin Nievera in a talk-show format. Hyun Bin gamely played along with fun games like guessing Pinoy words by emoji, answering “Have Bin or Haven’t Bin” questions, fun fan interactions, and sharing candid anecdotes that revealed more of his personality.

Hyun Bin has never answered any comment (even anonymously) about him online ever. He admitted he doesn’t have social media but often searches for himself online—yes, even during this trip—to see what’s being said. “I search myself a lot. I even see the photos that the fans have uploaded on my arrival here in the Philippines.”

During the Meet and Greet hosted by Martin Nievera, Hyun Bin confessed that he has taken home a prop from a shoot, the one for Secret Garden: “It was the nameplate of Kim Joo Won (my character) on his desk. For a long time, it was on my personal desk.”

He confessed to always feeling nervous before a shoot, and added, “I was never late to a shoot because I’ve overslept. If ever I’d be late, it will be due to traffic.”

He was asked if he’s ever gone out in public wearing a disguise. Interestingly, he did. “I once went out having a special makeover in disguise. So we actually had a shoot for a movie. One time, we had a special disguise for a character. And I thought during break time, ‘What would happen if I go out in this disguise?’ And I did go out. I was disguised as an old man so no one realized that it was me. So it worked!”

Golden confetti for Korean superstar Hyun Bin at Solaire Resort: “I search myself a lot. I even see the photos that the fans have uploaded on my arrival in the Philippines.”

Another question thrown at him was if he has taken home a prop from a film or project. As a fan cheekily suggested that the best “prop” he’s taken from a shoot was his wife (actress Son Ye Jin), he laughed but answered seriously, “The one I remember right now is during Secret Garden. It was Kim Joo Won’s (his character) nameplate on his desk. After I got that prop, for a long time, it was on my personal desk.”

His chosen superhero alter ego? Iron Man. No explanations made. And the only autograph he’s ever asked for? Korean football superstar Son Heung-min’s, who is his country’s pride.

A star and a gentleman

From his memorable characters to his genuine engagement with fans, Hyun Bin’s popularity isn’t just about his roles, it’s about the man himself. Solaire Resort’s decision to bring him here wasn’t just a promotional coup; it was an event that united fans and the property in one unforgettable moment. And just like the golden confetti that rained down at the finale of the meet and greet, the memories made that day will linger long after the lights dimmed.

Bin there, done that

THE PHILIPPINE STAR: Why did you choose to partner with Solaire Resort? What is it about the resort/property that appeals to you?

HYUN BIN: Solaire is more than just a resort, it’s a place where you can truly have an experience. I wanted to work together with Solaire so more people could learn about it and hopefully get the chance to experience it themselves.

It is your first time in the Philippines. What would you like to experience or try to get a feel of the local culture?

When I have schedules overseas, I usually try to go out and visit local markets and places like that, if time allows. This time as well, if I get the chance, I’d love to explore local markets. They often have so many delicious foods to try as well.

Among all the dramas and movies you’ve made, what is your favorite and why?

Harbin holds a very special meaning for me. It tells the painful history of our country, and portraying a real historical figure came with a huge sense of responsibility. It was a huge challenge for me and it was the project I approached with the most sincerity. The movie is about those who devoted and sacrificed themselves for our country. I was extremely careful with every single line and movement, making sure I wouldn’t dishonor them in any way.

If you were to crash land anywhere in the world, where will it be?

As far as I know, the Philippines has over 7,000 islands. I think it will be great to visit one of the most beautiful of islands among them. If you recommend one, where will it be? (I suggested Hermana Mayor in Zambales; he smiled and said, “Okay, next time!”)

Crash Landing on You was a global success and came during the COVID pandemic, providing much-needed entertainment to all. What do you think were the characteristics of Captain Ri that the audience loved?

During COVID, people all over the world were having a difficult time. But I think the kindness and warmth of the character Ri Jeong-Hyeok may have brought some comfort to people’s hearts.

Is there anything you want to say to your Filipino fans?

Thank you very much. I am truly grateful for the constant and unwavering support you’ve given me from afar. I’ll keep working hard so this connection we’ve built never fades. And I look forward to greeting you again through a new project.”
