Jennifer Lopez shares how she let her children know about divorce from Ben Affleck
Jennifer Lopez opened up about her heartfelt conversation with her kids about her divorce from Ben Affleck.
In an interview with El Pais, the 55-year-old American singer and songwriter revealed how she told her 17-year-old twins Max and Emme about their split. (Lopez shares Max and Emme with Marc Anthony. They tied the knot in 2004 and split in 2011. They settled their divorce in 2014.)
"I said, 'I promise you, this is a difficult time, but you're going to see that I'll come out the other side stronger and better.' I promised them that and I did it. And they feel it now. That gives me a great sense of peace in my life," Lopez recalled.
The Mother actress took pride in how far she's come emotionally and mentally over the past few years.
"I'm happier that I'm a step further along than I was a year ago, two years ago, three years ago… I'm proud of myself for that and I'm proud that I was able to navigate my children through difficult times—that they're stronger and better because of it," she mused. "So, it's a great time to go out there and dance and sing and have a good time with everybody."
The former couple started dating in 2002, but two years later, they called off their engagement and started their own families with other partners. It wasn't until 2021 that they reignited their romance and married twice: first, in an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas, and then in a formal affair in Georgia in 2022.
Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in August 2024, with irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split.
In January this year, Lopez and Affleck finalized their divorce after being married for two years.
Affleck opened up about his divorce from Lopez for the first time in March, stressing that he has "a lot of respect" for his ex.
"I guess there's a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. But honestly, like I said, the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting," Affleck said in an interview with GQ.
The actor also noted that there was "no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue" with their breakup and that he won't dive further into it as it's "sort of embarrassing" and "feels vulnerable."
"It's just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do," he continued.
