Halle Berry's ex-husband on why they split: 'She don’t cook, don’t clean, don't seem motherly'

Former professional baseball player David Justice shared why his marriage with actress Halle Berry didn't work out.

In his guest appearance on Matt Barnes' All the Smoke podcast, Justice explained that the reason he and Berry split was because he expected her to be a traditional housewife, something that she didn't conform to.

"My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast, so I’m looking at my mom—and I’m a Midwest guy. So in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?" the former MLB player said.

"Then I'm thinking, 'Okay, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?' At that time, as a young guy, she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues," he continued.

Their marital problems further escalated due to the demands of their jobs, which often kept them away from each other.

"We spent a lot of time apart because she was doing movies in this country, that country. And we honestly probably could have made it if I knew about therapy. If we knew about therapy, we probably could have made it," Justice said.

"We never had any major issues like that. It’s just…because I was young and had only been in one real relationship before her," he admitted.

Justice also recalled how Berry had asked him to marry her after only five months of dating.

"I said okay, because I couldn't say no. Who's going to say no at that time? I don't know if my heart was really into it, but I didn't want to make her feel bad and say no, you know, or [if] I was just in the moment," he said.

The pair tied the knot in 1993 before separating after only three years of being together in 1996. Their divorce became finalized in June 1997.

Justice is now married to Rebecca Villalobos, a former model turned successful designer and entrepreneur, while Berry started dating musician Van Hunt in 2020.
