Olympic medalist Audun Groenvold dies after being struck by lightning
Olympian Audun Groenvold passed away after being struck by lightning.
The Norwegian Ski Federation announced his death in a statement, saying that the incident happened during a cabin trip.
The 49-year-old national alpine and ski cross athlete was rushed to the nearest hospital, where he was "treated for the injuries he sustained in the lightning strike." He, however, was later declared dead on July 15.
Norwegian Ski Federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug mourned the death of Groenvold, whom he described as "a prominent figure who has meant so much to both the alpine and freestyle communities."
He said that the skier's passing leaves a "big void."
Groenvold won bronze in men's ski cross at the Vancouver Games in 2010.
According to E! News, he became part of Norway’s national alpine skiing team in 1993 and played for them until 2004 before getting into freestyle and ski cross.
After his 2010 Olympics stint, he served as a national team coach and TV commentator. He also joined the board of the Norwegian Ski Association.
Groenvold is survived by his wife, Kristin Tandberg Haugsjå, with whom he shared three children.
