Tom Cruise's joints in fingers got separated during plane stunt in 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning'
The joints of Tom Cruise's fingers got separated during a plane stunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, director Christopher McQuarrie said.
Entertainment Weekly, citing the bonus feature of the movie's digital release, exclusively reported that Cruise and McQuarry were commenting on the scene where the actor was dangling off the side of a biplane and holding onto the strap of a seat belt as it flips upside down.
“Now watch this: The thing we haven’t talked about, holding on to this belt,” McQuarrie said, with Cruise adding, “Oh God, that was brutal.”
“This separated the joints in Tom’s fingers from the force," McQuarrie added, "so by the time we finished this sequence, your hands were absolutely swollen—oh my God, it was so painful to watch."
The Final Reckoning was released in theaters last May. It's the sequel to the 2018 movie Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and is the eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series.
The Final Reckoning is among the most expensive movies ever made, with a reported budget of $400 million (P22.8 billion) according to Variety. It was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the two Hollywood strikes, and inflation increases. It was the sixth-highest-grossing movie of 2025, making $596.5 million (P34.1 billion) at the global box office.
Before Mission Impossible, Cruise already made a name for himself in the '80s, starring in movies like Risky Business, Top Gun, The Color of Money, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, and Magnolia.
