Princess Diana's last words recalled on 28th death anniversary

People continue to remember Princess Diana 28 years after her death in a Paris car crash on Aug. 31, 1997.

The "People's Princess" —who was a devoted mother to Prince William and Prince Harry—passed away at 36. She and her new partner, Dodi Fayed, got chased into a tunnel by aggressive paparazzi before their vehicle lost control and struck a pillar, leaving Fayed and his driver instantly dead at the scene.

Diana was still alive when first responders reached her. But after hours of emergency care, she succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the accident.

In a previous interview with The Independent, firefighter Xavier Gourmelon recalled that Diana briefly regained consciousness after the crash and uttered her final words.

"My God, what has happened?" she asked him.

Diana went into cardiac arrest moments later.

According to Gourmelon, he and other responders immediately performed chest compressions and managed to revive her. At that moment, he believed she would survive.

"It was a relief, of course, because as a first responder, you want to save lives—and that's what I thought I had done," he said.

"I know now that there were serious internal injuries, but the whole episode is still very much in my mind," he continued. "The memory of that night will stay with me forever."

In August, a time capsule that was buried by the late princess in 1991 and meant to be opened "hundreds of years" later was unearthed. Find out the items that were found inside in this link.
