You can now send Spotify recos to friends within the app

Ever get tired of the hassle of switching between apps just to share a song with a friend? Now, you don't have to. Spotify has introduced a new feature that lets you share music directly as a message within the app.

Messages is a new chat-based feature that lets Spotify users share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the app. The feature creates a “dedicated space” for listeners to connect, recommend tracks, and revisit past recommendations.

Until now, Spotify users often relied on social media or third-party messaging apps to share content. With ‘Messages’, Spotify aims to bring that interaction in-house, making listening more social and interactive.

According to its website, the feature was developed in response to user feedback calling for an easier way to share music and podcasts with friends and family directly in Spotify. The platform emphasized that recommendations have always been at the “heart of the Spotify experience,” and said its goal is “to give users what they want and make those moments of connection more seamless and streamlined.”

Before you think this is meant to replace social media, Spotify clarified that its new messaging feature is designed to complement existing integrations, encouraging users to continue sharing content across all their favorite platforms.

How to use Messages

Starting this week, Messages will be available on mobile devices for Free and Premium users aged 16 and above in select markets.

Users can send one-on-one messages to people they’ve previously interacted with on Spotify.

To share a song or a podcast, tap the 'share' icon in the Now Playing view, then select a friend, and hit send.

Aside from this, users can also interact with text messages.

Messages can also be accessed from the profile icon in the top-left corner, with suggested contacts based on past interactions such as sharing content, joining Jams or Blends, creating collaborative playlists, or being part of the same Family or Duo plan.

Don't worry about receiving random messages from strangers. Like other messaging apps, users can accept or decline message requests and block accounts.
