'Heartstopper' to end with a feature film instead of Season 4
Heads up, Heartstopper fans! Nick and Charlie's love story is finally coming to a close, but instead of being stretched into a whole fourth season, the romantic comedy-drama will get the movie treatment.
In an announcement by Netflix, Heartstopper will conclude with a feature film that will pick up from the Season 3 finale, which saw Nick, Charlie, and many of their friends take their relationships to a new level.
The movie will explore how "inevitable milestones affect the maturing characters" as Nick prepares to leave for university and Charlie finds new independence at school, making them feel the pressures of maintaining a long-distance relationship.
Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on.
Kit Connor and Joe Locke, who play Nick and Charlie respectively, are set to reprise their roles for the film. This time, the pair will also serve as executive producers alongside Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman.
"I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story," Oseman said. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion."
The film will be directed by Wash Westmoreland, who is known for helming the 2014 film Still Alice that stars Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart, and Alec Baldwin.
The final installment will be based on Oseman’s upcoming sixth graphic novel volume. While there is no publish date yet for the book, it is expected to drop ahead of the film's release.
Apart from Connor and Locke, Heartstopper also stars William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Tobie Donovan, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, and Rhea Norwood.
Heartstopper tells a simple yet heartwarming story of a gay schoolboy named Charlie who falls head over heels for his seatmate Nick, while also exploring the lives and love stories of his other friends who are also part of the LGBTQ community.
Due to its inclusive portrayal and representation, the series garnered instant popularity, having claimed a spot on the top 10 English series on Netflix just two days after it premiered in 2022.
No release date has been set for the film, but Netflix stated that filming will start this summer.
