Hoi An of my dreams

Published Jun 28, 2025 5:00 pm

In the middle of verdant rice fields, where carabao grazed beneath the golden Vietnamese sun, I found myself surrounded by stillness, serenity—and art. Like standing before a priceless Amorsolo, the beauty of the landscape and the vibrant paintings around me stirred something deep within.

Where was I?

Hoi An a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where mosaic lanterns dance with the wind, as if time has stood still, and where one’s soul can be at ease. Two kilometers east of the Ancient Town remains a hidden sanctuary that cradles the essence of Vietnam with refinement: Little Oasis, an eco-friendly hotel and spa, is Hoi An’s newest environment-friendly, luxurious accommodation.

Featuring idyllic scenes of the pristine riverbank, Little Oasis’ Hoi An contemporary design and decor draw much inspiration from the traditions and architecture of historic Hoi An, making this a unique and beautiful luxury hotel with welcoming accents of the old town throughout. The 132 luxurious, spacious suites all have private balconies and feature custom furnishings and decor, high ceilings, and amazing bathrooms with large pedestal baths separate from the showers.

Little Oasis—a home away from home powered by Filipino warmth—welcomed us with generosity. It was an experience deeply rooted in the Filipino tradition of heartfelt hospitality despite being in Vietnam.  Leading this culture of care was Filipino GM Salome Villaflor, whose presence instantly made us feel like part of a family, not just guests.  Her lovingly curated programs, composed of various Vietnamese cooking classes, lantern-making, and coffee crafting, deepened our connection to the culture. She even arranged day trips to Marble Mountain, shopping escapades in Old Town, and resort hopping that felt more like soul journeys than mere sightseeing.

Another unexpected blessing came in the person of Ezra Barela, our butler, guide and, ultimately, a dear friend. Ezra didn’t just take care of us, he cherished us. He brought us to every shop of our hearts’ desires. We shopped for clothes, shoes, paintings, food, art, cashmere and silk that you could have tailored overnight into anything you desired. We dined in wonderful places that served authentic Vietnamese cuisine, nestled in buildings of red wood adorned with flowers, barks and more. Ezra’s local vernacular helped us score the best deals. We’ll remember his kindness and outlook in life; we’ll treasure and carry his attitude wherever we go, because he is not just a part of Little Oasis, he is the very embodiment of the warm, soulful hospitality that makes Little Oasis a sanctuary.

Every morning at the hotel, we were greeted by a school of cheerful and plump koi fish that swam up as if to say “good morning” to all guests. The gym with the latest equipment helped us keep fit. And the breakfast spread, with endless choices of local delicacies and international comfort foods, was a feast to remember.

Infinity pools stretch into the skies — a dreamscape unique to Hoi An.

Each night, we wandered into the old city, so beautiful it reminded me of the Caribbean or the colorful towns of Mexico, where vivid yellows lit up the streets and bougainvillea bloomed in bright, bold pink. The stores were aglow with lanterns and paroles, radiating warmth and charm that perfectly captured the spirit of Hoi An.

Little Riverside Hoi An with under a hundred rooms was a cozy retreat. The hotel offered a hearty breakfast, charming and cozy lodgings, an expansive pool, and boats anchored by the riverbank where you could dine.

I had the privilege to exchange pleasantries with the lovely Jenny Dizon, general manager of Little Riverside Hoi An—Little Luxury Hotel & Spa, who hails from the Philippines. She began her career working for the dynamic Maritel Nievera at Cabalen.

She believes that one must be strong and resilient, especially when working abroad. What truly stood out was her deep pride in the Filipino spirit—how we come together, support one another like family.

Truly, Little Oasis is more than a destination—it is a home away from home, a cozy respite, a sweet dream come true!
