Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor in Bowie, Maryland, are shutting down for good at the end of the 2025 season, the park announced on May 1.

In a press release, Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said that the amusement park and water park, located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, "are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan." Its final day will be on Nov. 2, 2025.

"After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment," he said.

The owners plan to sell the nearly 500-acre property for future redevelopment.

It also acknowledged the impact it would have on its park associates and guests, saying that they are grateful to them for working hard "to create lifelong memories for our guests."

“This was a difficult decision, and we recognize the impact it will have on our Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor park associates and guests,” Zimmerman added.

Zimmerman said, "Six Flags is committed to supporting all impacted associates through the closure process at the end of this year.”

Six Flags America, which employs approximately 70 full-time staff, will offer eligible employees severance packages and benefits. Additionally, it will honor season passes for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, home to some of the most intense thrill rides and massive roller coasters, operates over 27 amusement parks, 15 water parks, and nine resorts across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

The Six Flags America site originally opened in 1974 as The Largo Wildlife Preserve, a drive-thru safari, before being reimagined as Six Flags America in 1999.
