Arroz caldo, lugaw, and more among TasteAtlas' best-rated porridges in the world
Three Filipino porridges have been recognized among the best-rated in the world for 2025 by TasteAtlas.
The online food and travel guide has released its ranking for the best porridges in the world, with Pinoy favorites such as arroz caldo, lugaw, and champorado placing in the top 50.
Indonesia's Bubur Ayam, a "thick rice porridge topped with shredded chicken and various savory condiments," emerged in the first place, while in second place was the Philippines' arroz caldo.
The Pinoy dish, a variety of congee, is made with chicken, rice, and a ginger-infused broth. It's served with various accompaniments and seasonings like calamansi, fried garlic, and scallions.
It was followed by Georgia's Elarji, Romania's Taci şi înghite, and Ukraine's Banosh, respectively.
Per TasteAtlas, BusyBee in Zambaonga City, Café Via Mare, Razon's of Guagua, Italianni's Restaurant, and Goto King serve the best arroz caldo across the Philippines.
Meanwhile, lugaw, a Filipino rice porridge traditionally considered soft food for the sick, bagged the 10th spot.
TastAtlas said lugaw acts as an "ideal base" for any type of meat and seasonings, similar to congee, and is usually consumed for breakfast or as a snack. Quezon City's Lugawan Republic, Love Desserts, and Davao Dencia's Restaurant are among the recommended spots to try.
Another local porridge that also made it to the list is champorado in 19th place. This Pinoy dish is prepared initially with chocolate and is usually made with cooked glutinous rice blended with sugar and cocoa powder.
The food and travel guide recommends trying champorado at Max's Restaurant, Kanto Freestyle Breakfast, Tapa King, and The Sunny Side Café.
TasteAtlas has recognized Philippine cuisine several times.
In February of this year, Tortang Talong emerged as the second-best egg dish in the world, while classic restaurant The Aristocrat and Café Adriatic landed on the 73rd and 90th spots, respectively, in the world's top 100 restaurants.
TasteAtlas is "an encyclopedia of flavors." It features a collection of maps of traditional dishes, local ingredients, and authentic restaurants that have earned recognition locally and worldwide.
