The Philippines made an impact at this year's Ocean Geographic Pictures of the Year competition, with three Filipino visual storytellers earning international accolades for their exceptional underwater photography.

On World Ocean Day, July 8, PJ Aristorenas, Mark Chang, and Luzelle Tioco Artillero were recognized during the awards show, which was held virtually.

"Now in its 13th year, this competition has become a global platform for marine photographers and filmmakers to shine a light, not just into the depths of the ocean, but into the heart of our collective consciousness," American marine biologist and oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle said.

According to Earle, they received over 10,000 entries from over 35 countries.

"The winning photographs and films represent a pinnacle of marine visual excellence. These are not just images, they are of windows into the world underwater that most will never see or experience firsthand. These pictures show general public, the wonders, the beauty, the mystery, and the urgency of the ocean's story. They celebrate the vibrant life under the sea, but they also echo the silence of what is being lost. When it leads us to why this day matters so deeply, we cannot celebrate the ocean without also acknowledging the truth," she said.

"Let this celebration of visual brilliance, also be a call to action. These images don't just show us what's at stake. it shows us the inspiration to take care of the ocean, let the ocean's voice be heard," she added.

Aristorenas took top honors in the Smartphone Category with a stunning and cinematic image of Pokémon nudibranchs captured in the act of procreation. His photo impressed judges with its blend of marine biology and storytelling, earning him prizes from Divevolk.

Mark Chang, on the other hand, was given an Honorable Mention in the Coral Reefs Around the World category. His powerful image paid tribute to the "beauty and fragility of reef ecosystems."

Also earning an Honorable Mention was Luzelle Tioco Artillero who was recognized as the Emerging Photographer of the Year. Her work stood out for her "unique vision and artistic command beneath the surface."

Both Chang and Artillero will receive Ocean Geographic Expedition Vouchers as part of their award.

The winners were selected by a distinguished panel of marine conservation icons and underwater art, including Earle, David Doubilet, Brian Skerry, and more.

The Ocean Geographic Society unites top ocean scientists, explorers, photographers, and artists from around the world to raise awareness, inspire action, and celebrate the ocean through powerful storytelling.

Its flagship initiative, the OGPICOTY competition, serves as a premier platform to amplify the voices and images of those who advocate for the ocean.
