Discaya couple's 40 luxury cars to be probed by BOC
The Bureau of Customs will look into the reported 40 luxury cars owned by contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya, who are linked to companies that have projects with the Department of Public Works and Highways.
BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno said in an interview with Ted Failon & DJ Chacha that the agency will investigate whether the said vehicles are legal, undervalued, or smuggled.
"Since na-open naman po 'yung impormasyon diyan, patitingnan ko kaagad," he said on Aug. 25.
Nepomuceno added that the BOC needs a court order to conduct operations, as it is a private residence. The Letter of Authority, typically used for operations, applies to commercial establishments and warehouses.
"Makakaasa po kayo, aaksyunan natin 'yan," he added.
In September 2024, the Discayas were featured in interviews about their rags-to-riches story. Their interview on Julius Babao's YouTube channel has made the rounds anew, particularly the segment about their 40 high-end cars.
In the video, the garage included SUVs and pick-up trucks, most of which are from the US, like Cadillac Escalade, GMC Denali, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Dodge Ram, Toyota Tundra, and Toyota Sequoia. They also have locally bought cars in their collection, such as a Chevrolet Suburban and a Toyota Alphard.
The Discayas also own a Porsche Cayenne, a Maserati, a Mercedes-Benz G 63, a Bentley, and a Rolls-Royce Cullinan with an Hermes Orange interior, which they said is their "favorite."
Sarah, who lost the Pasig mayor race against Vico Sotto in the midterm elections, told Babao that having a luxury car collection helps show their clients they "have the capacity to execute a project."
"Part of the resume kumbaga," she said.
Discaya interviews called out
In a Facebook post on Aug. 21, Sotto called out veteran journalists who interviewed contractors entering politics, supposedly in exchange for millions of pesos. This comes amid the hot topic of corruption in flood control projects.
Sotto shared screenshots of Curlee and Sarah being interviewed by Babao and Korina Sanchez. The two have since denied the allegations and pointed out that the interviews were lifestyle features, not news reports.
The Discayas are linked with companies that have projects with the Department of Public Works and Highways, including Alpha and Omega Gen. Contractor & Development Corporation, St. Timothy Construction, and St. Gerrard Construction General Contractor and Development Corporation.
In his interview, Babao asked the Discayas, "Ano 'yung naging gateway para gumanda ang buhay ninyo," and they responded, "Noong nag-DPWH kami."
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., during his fourth State of the Nation Address on July 28, called out government officials who allegedly commit corruption, particularly in flood control projects.
