Senior citizens and persons with disabilities can now enjoy a higher train fare discount of 50% from 20% when taking the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

The Department of Transportation started implementing the additional discount for seniors and PWDs on Wednesday, July 16—about a month after students were given a 50% fare discount.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. led the launch of the discount at the MRT-3 Santolan Station.

In his speech, Marcos said that about 13 million seniors and seven million PWDs may benefit from it annually. He added that the fares they'd save can be used for other needs, like medicine.

DOTr Sec. Vince Dizon, who was also at the launch, said, "Maliit na bagay lang ito para gawing mas abot-kaya ang public transportation sa ating priority sectors."

Like the student discount, seniors and PWDs may avail of the 50% discount on trains every day, including weekends and holidays, until 2028. They must present their IDs at ticket counters to get the discounts.

According to the DOTr, the 50% discount will automatically be applied using the registered white Beep cards for PWDs and senior citizens.

It also works for single journey tickets.

Like the new fares for students, the minimum fare for LRT-1 is P10, and the maximum is P28 for an end-to-end line from Dr. Abad Santos Station to Fernando Poe Jr. Station.

On LRT-2, the minimum discounted fare is P8 and the maximum is P18 for a trip from Recto Station to Antipolo Station.

On MRT-3, the minimum discounted fare is P6 and the maximum is P14 for a trip from Taft Station to North Avenue Station.
