Baby dies after drunk dad sleeps on top of her
An infant died of suffocation after her father allegedly slept on top of her while he was drunk. The baby was only 28 days old.
Citing authorities, local outlet Times of India reported that Alakunta Shekar, 22, came back to their in-laws’ home intoxicated between 5:00 and 6:00 in the morning of May 20. The victim and her mother, Sujatha, were asleep when the incident took place.
Allepu Rajamani, the infant’s grandmother, went to the police station in the afternoon of the same day to file a complaint against Shekar. According to her, Shekar fought with Sujatha the night before and insisted on bringing his wife home immediately after welcoming their child.
"On May 19 night, Shekar came to our house, knocked, and kicked the door multiple times, demanding to take his wife home. We didn't allow him in,” Rajamani is quoted as saying. She added that the following morning, Shekar went inside their room and went to bed without noticing that their newborn was covered in a bedsheet.
“My daughter woke up and screamed when she realized what had happened,” she said. “We turned on the light, and when Shekar got up, we saw the baby bleeding from the nose.”
Their little girl was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
According to Times of India, authorities confirmed that Shekar has been arrested. An investigation on the matter is ongoing.
