Pope Leo XIV has named former education secretary Armin Luistro to a Vatican dicastery.

Luistro, a Lasallian Brother, was appointed as a member of the Dicastery for the Institute of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life. Several other bishops and clergy from different countries were also welcomed as members.

La Salle Global extended its best wishes to the former Department of Education chief in his "new mission."

"The appointment is a clear sign of the synodal path that we, as Lasallians, are called to walk in communion with the church," it said in a statement.

According to its website, the Dicastery for the Institute of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life "promotes, encourages, and regulates the practice of the evangelical counsels, how they are lived out in the approved forms of consecrated life and all matters concerning the life and activity of Societies  of Apostolic Life through the Latin Church."

Luistro is the first Asian Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Formerly a religion teacher, he served as the president of De La Salle University System from 2004 to 2010.

During the late Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's administration, Luistro was appointed secretary of DepEd, making him the second De La Salle Brother to hold the post. While the Lasallian Brother was education chief, the K-12 program, which added two years to the basic education curriculum, was implemented.

In May, Pope Leo XIV met with the De La Salle Brothers in Vatican City.

"After three centuries, it is wonderful to see how your presence continues to carry the freshness of a rich and far-reaching educational reality, through which, still today and in various parts of the world, you devote yourselves to the formation of young people with enthusiasm, fidelity, and a spirit of sacrifice,” he said.
