Woman convicted of fraud avoids jail sentence by getting pregnant three times in 4 years

A Chinese woman found guilty of fraud managed to avoid her five-year prison sentence. Her method? She became pregnant three times in just four years.

Citing local media, the South China Morning Post reported that the woman, known by the pseudonym Chen Hong, was convicted of fraud in December 2020 in central China’s Shanxi province.

However, she was unable to serve her sentence because she became pregnant three times over four years. In China, individuals serving prison sentences may serve their sentence outside prison if they have serious medical conditions, are pregnant or nursing infants, or are incapable of caring for themselves independently.

This would need approval from the court, and if granted, they will be under strict supervision by their residence’s community correctional institutions. They are also required to submit an illness diagnosis or a pregnancy examination report once every three months, per the outlet.

An inspection in May revealed that Chen, who had just given birth to her third child, had given away her third baby to her sister-in-law.

She also admitted that she had already divorced her husband, who had been living with her first two children.

The local public prosecutor believed that Chen chose to get pregnant to avoid her prison sentence. She was sent back to the detention center, instead of a prison, to finish the rest of her jail term.
