Filipino tourist killed after getting hit by taxi in Hong Kong
A Filipino tourist's Hong Kong vacation ended in tragedy after he was killed by a taxi driver who lost control of his vehicle.
In a statement sent to reporters, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong confirmed the death of the 35-year-old tourist and stated that his remains are currently at Kwai Chung Public Mortuary.
"The Consulate General offers its deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and prays for his eternal rest," it said, adding that it's now assisting the victim's family and is anticipating their arrival in HK to arrange the shipment of remains.
The Consulate is also coordinating with local authorities as the investigation remains ongoing.
According to The Standard, the incident took place outside the Nina Hotel Tseun Wan West. The victim was carrying his luggage and looking at his phone as he stepped out of the building when the taxi suddenly crashed into the hotel's exterior.
The collision resulted in the victim getting trapped between the marble columns and the vehicle.
The tourist was rushed to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said that the 70-year-old taxi driver, who suffered from minor injuries, is now in police custody and is facing charges of suspected dangerous driving, causing death.
The accident occured as he reportedly felt dizzy while he was driving, which caused him to lose control of the car.
