LOOK: DOTr unveils layout plan for 'Mt. Kamuning' footbridge replacement
The infamous EDSA-Kamuning footbridge, once dubbed as “Mt. Kamuning” for its steep climb, is finally getting a transformation.
In a recently released video, the Department of Transportation unveiled the layout plan for the redesigned Kamuning footbridge, promising “a safer, wider, and more accessible way to cross EDSA.”
Unlike its predecessor, the new footbridge will be connected directly to the GMA-Kamuning EDSA Busway station, making transfers easier for commuters.
According to the DOTr, the project reflects its commitment to provide “world-class infrastructure that will improve commuters’ daily travel experience.”
The replacement footbridge will feature a lower elevation, elevators, and wider stairs, directly linked to the busway station. Its design follows newer commuter-friendly structures already in place along the EDSA Busway. Completion is targeted for December this year.
DOTr has allotted P89.13 million for the project, which also covers the rehabilitation of the busway station. Funding was secured under the 2024 General Appropriations Act as part of the EDSA Busway Project.
Once completed, the new footbridge is expected to resolve complaints and serve as a model for more inclusive pedestrian infrastructure along EDSA.
The EDSA-Kamuning footbridge opened in November 2018. At the time, the Metro Manila Development Authority said the bridge, which had a P10 million budget for its construction, was constructed to minimize cases of road crashes in that area.
In June, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered its demolition during a site inspection of the GMA–Kamuning station.
“We have to tear it down and build a better one,” he told the DOTr.
