22-year-old woman dies after suffering severe allergic reaction during CT scan
A woman died at 22 after suffering a severe allergic reaction during a routine CT scan.
Local media outlet G1 reported that law graduate Leticia Paul unexpectedly went into anaphylactic shock in the middle of the exam at the Alto Vale Regional Hospital in Rio do Sul, Brazil. It included a special dye or contrast material that makes some parts of the body look brighter and easier to see on images.
According to Mayo Clinic, when one experiences anaphylactic shock, "blood pressure drops suddenly and the airways narrow, blocking breathing."
Paul's aunt told G1 that the patient had to be intubated following the incident and then passed away less than 24 hours after.
She has been cremated at the Vatican Crematorium in Balneário Camboriú.
"We take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to ethics, transparency and healthcare safety, highlighting that all procedures are conducted in accordance with recommended clinical protocols," the hospital said in an official statement translated to English by PEOPLE Magazine.
Per her relative, Paul had been going in and out of the hospital due to kidney stones.
She was taking her postgraduate studies in law and real estate before she died.
