Man dies after getting sucked into an airplane's engine
A gruesome scene took place at an airport in Milan when a man died after getting sucked into an airplane's engine.
According to UK newspaper Metro, the incident started when a 35-year-old man identified to be Andrea Russo ran onto the airport's runway just as a Volotea Airlines jet was about to take off.
This caused him to get dragged into the plane's engine and subsequently be killed.
Sky News, meanwhile, detailed that Russo entered the airport terminal by driving the wrong way down a road.
As he left his car, he ran into the arrivals area and headed to an emergency door that led to the runway. Those who witnessed the scene said that airport security was unable to stop the man during his unauthorized entry.
Several flights were then suspended from 10:20 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. after the incident.
"A person, who was not a passenger or airport personnel, trespassed onto the runway while the aircraft was preparing for takeoff. Sadly, the person was struck by the engine and has passed away. The airline deeply regrets this tragic incident and extends its condolences to the family of the person involved," a spokesperson for Volotea Airlines told Metro.
They assured that all 154 passengers on board, along with the six Volotea crew members, are physically safe after they were promptly disembarked and taken to a designated area.
"Psychological support was also offered to both passengers and crew members. The affected passengers were rebooked on another Volotea flight," the airline stated.
The Spanish carrier stressed that they are now fully cooperating with local authorities and the Milan-Bergamo Airport amid investigations into the man's death.
"The airline would like to express its gratitude to its crew for their swift response and support of passengers, as well as to its passengers for their cooperation during this difficult situation. The safety and well-being of Volotea’s passengers, crew, and airport partners is the airline’s top priority," Volotea said.
"The airline expresses its condolences once again to all those affected by this incident," they added.
According to Metro, Russo was a recovering addict who was "trying to rebuild a life."
