Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement announcement caught Swifties and even non-Swifties alike by surprise, becoming the subject of several memes.

The couple shared the news on Wednesday, Aug. 27 in their collaborative Instagram post with the caption: "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married." It likely alludes to the fact that she's a songwriter and he's a football player.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay referenced the couple's caption in his congratulatory Instagram post for Kelce and Swift, saying it's from their "favourite Home [Economics] Teacher."

"From one ring to the next," Ramsay said, sharing a photo of him shaking hands with Kelce.

Even US President Donald Trump made a comment—never mind his past aversion to Swift.

According to USA Today, Trump was in a Cabinet meeting when the news broke, prompting a reporter on-site to ask his thoughts about the engagement.

"Well, I wish them a lot of luck. I think he's a great player, a great guy. I think she's a terrific person," he said. "So, I wish them a lot of luck."

The iconic Empire State Building in New York, meanwhile, on TikTok presented itself as a wedding venue for Swift and Kelce.

"AND YOU CAME IN WEARING A FOOTBALL HELMET," it said in the caption, referencing Swift's 2012 song Stay Stay Stay, of its promotional video set to Love Story, particularly the "Marry me Juliet" part.

Right after the engagement, the building also apparently alluded to the news, posting on X, "DROP EVERYTHING NOW."

The engagement news also brought so much joy to X users, so much so that they felt Swift and Kelce's milestone was also theirs.

A user shared an image of American painter Edward Mason Eggleston's "Paul Revere's Midnight Ride," which depicts the titular subject riding a horse and carrying a lamp to inform the military about the approaching British troops. This time around, things got recontextualized: "Texting my group chats that Taylor and Travis are engaged."

Another user, meanwhile, likened the feeling to that of a sibling. "Deeply parasocial of me but I feel like my own sister got engaged rn," the user said.

Another one, meanwhile, joked that they "can't wait" for producer Jack Antonoff, Swift's frequent collaborator, to "be a bridesmaid."

Of course, the Filipino Swifties aren't to be outdone.

The Philippine STAR's Facebook post followed the "na para bang" trend using Swift's life achievements: her reclaiming her masters, her announcing her 12th album, and her getting engaged.

"NAIYAK NA PARA BANG KAMI'Y KAMAG-ANAK," the caption read. "2025 is your year, Taylor Swift! We are happy for you!"

In the comments section, The STAR added, "Na para bang imbitado sa kasal?!" and the hashtag "#TaylorfoundherRaytone," a reference to the wedding of content creator Zeinab Harake and basketball player Bobby Ray Parks Jr.

Speaking of wedding hashtags, which is a common practice among Filipinos that it has become an avenue for wit and gags, meme page PGAG was quick to ask followers what Swift and Kelce's wedding hashtag should be.

Entries with the highest reactions include "#TaylorTravisTamangPanahon," an apparent reference to AlDub, which recently became a hot topic anew after Maine Mendoza admitted to falling in love with Alden Richards at the height of their love team's fame.

Another one was "#BakitTravisKitangMahalHoneyMyLoveSoSwift," which references the OPM hits Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal by Boyfriends and Honey My Love So Sweet by April Boy Regino.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's love story

Swift and Kelce started dating in 2023 after the singer performed at Arrowhead Stadium—home of Kelce's Chiefs. He explained on the New Heights podcast at the time that he was disappointed he did not have a chance to meet her and give her his phone number at the show.

Swift said she was charmed by the public declaration of interest. The gesture made her feel like she was "in an '80s John Hughes movie, and he was just like, standing outside of my window with a boombox and being like, 'I want to date you,'" she said on the episode.

She said she thought, "If this guy isn't crazy, which is a big if, this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager."

Their relationship became public when she appeared at a Chiefs game to cheer on Kelce in September 2023.

"We actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other," Swift told Time in 2023, when the magazine named her Person of the Year. "By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple."

The singer appeared at several Chiefs games, including two Super Bowls, and sparked some criticism from NFL fans that TV networks showed her on camera too often and drew attention away from the game.

Kelce attended many stops on Swift's record-setting Eras Tour, which grossed more than $2 billion before concluding in December 2024. At a show in London, Kelce surprised the crowd by taking the stage briefly in a tuxedo and top hat and carrying Swift to a couch during I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.

Swift this month announced her upcoming album, The Life of a Showgirl, on New Heights, which Kelce hosts with his brother, former NFL player Jason Kelce.

The Shake It Off and Blank Space singer has often written songs about relationship troubles.

She said her upcoming Showgirl album, set for release on Oct. 3, will be joyful because "life is more upbeat."

Kelce will start his 13th regular season with the Chiefs in September. (with reports from Lisa Richwine, Reuters)
