Pinoy nurse assaulted, racially abused by UK couple

A Filipino nurse was assaulted by a couple in England as they launched racist tirades against her.

Apple Moorhouse, a Huddersfield resident who works as a nurse for the National Health Service, told local outlet Daily Mail that she was at Manor Heath Park in Halifax town with her daughters aged 11 and 6 and her parents, who were visiting on a holiday.

The UK couple, believed to be in their 60s, was with a group of dogwalkers, and they "found it funny that their dog was making my daughter uncomfortable," according to Moorhouse.

While she "doesn't normally confront people," Moorhouse said she felt "like I had to," as her youngest daughter felt "unsafe and scared" with the dog.

"I told the couple, 'If you can't control your dog, it should be on a lead," she recalled.

Moorhouse said the man then told her to "Shut up, f**k off, and go back to where you came from on the dinghy boat."

She and her family began filming the incident as the couple continued to verbally abuse her.

The Filipina posted the videos on her Facebook page, which now have thousands of reactions as of writing.

"Racial abuse still exists, unfortunately," she wrote in the caption with the hashtags #racism, #abuse, and #discrimination.

In one of the clips, the man's wife can be heard mocking Moorhouse's father and telling him, "You can't even speak English," before chuckling.

Turning to Moorhouse, who's off-camera, the woman said, "As for you, do you know what you are? That is what we call slavery," referring to the Filipino's job.

"Because people like you are the only people," the woman added, before her husband approached them and threw water at them, prompting Moorhouse's daughter to scream "Stop."

"I'm going to get you," the woman added.

The woman told Moorhouse, "You are in real trouble," while the man threw more water at them.

Moorhouse can be heard telling her daughter, "Did you get that?" referring to the video.

Another post, presumably from Moorhouse's perspective, showed the woman angrily confronting her.

"If you are a healthcare worker, you should know I'm an SRN [State Registered Nurse], I could be right above you," the woman said.

"Just shut up now. I'll make you so bloody sick, you will wonder what the hell is going on," she added before grabbing Moorhouse's phone.

The man threw more water at her again, while the woman sang "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."

In another video, the man also told his dog to "kill" her as it barked at her.

The verbal exchange led to the woman grabbing Moorhouse by the hair and pushing her to the ground. Moorhouse also ended up pushing the woman during the heated moment.

According to Daily Mail, it also led to Moorhouse being brought to the emergency room as she had a pulled rib and bruises on her hands.

"When I pushed her and struggled to get up, I felt so bad about it," she told the media outlet. "I didn't expect that it was going to get out of proportion. I am just thinking now. If I hadn't said anything to him, this shouldn't have happened."

"But maybe this happened for a reason," she added, "an eye-opener that racism still does exist, unfortunately."

In an update, UK-based news outlet 5Pillars shared a statement from the West Yorkshire Police saying that the man and the woman have been arrested.

"Police have today made two arrests in relation to an incident in Manor Heath Park in Halifax on Thursday which was widely shared on social media," it read. "A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault."
