Woman dies after falling from nearly 300-foot tower while posing for selfie with son
A mom of two died after a fatal fall from a nearly 300-foot tower while trying to get a selfie with his son.
Local media reported that Elizaveta Gushchina, a 45-year-old woman from Russia, passed away after a dangerous bungee jump over the weekend in front of her 22-year-old son named Nikita.
According to Russian news outlet REN TV, Gushchina—known to be an extreme sports fan—jumped from the platform of a 289-foot chimney at an unfinished thermal power plant with her son. After the successful jump, she returned to the top without the safety harness on. She tried to take a selfie with her son to celebrate, but ended up slipping off the platform.
“She secured herself to a rope used for rope jumping, but did not set the required safe length. Then, approaching the edge, the woman slipped on a wet board, fell from a height, and died,” a source told REN TV.
She turned 45 just a day before the tragedy. The trip was a birthday gift from her son, who is also from the same bungee jump center.
“Yesterday, under tragic circumstances, experienced jumper and mother of two children Liza, passed away,” the mom’s extreme sports club said in a statement.
“Elizaveta Gushchina, along with her son Nikita, is a member of our sports team. Now the entire team is mourning this loss. This is a very big tragedy for us,” it concluded.
Authorities are investigating whether the bungee jumping site in Pavlovsk, near St. Petersburg, complied with the law.
