Donald Trump praises Sydney Sweeney's controversial jeans ad: 'If she's a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic'

US President Donald Trump described Sydney Sweeney's controversial jeans ad as "fantastic" following reports that she's a registered Republican.

Trump was all praises for the actress' commercial for fashion brand American Eagle, which became the subject of backlash for its alleged promotion of "white supremacy" and "eugenics."

"She's a registered Republican?" Trump told FOX News last weekend. "Oh, now I love her ad."

"You'd be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That's what I wouldn't have known, but I'm glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic."

In his Truth Social post, Trump gushed over Sweeney's brand endorsement anew, saying she "has the hottest ad out there."

"Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves.' Go get ‘em Sydney!" he wrote.

He also slammed auto company Jaguar for its "woke" advertisement, which is a "Copy Nothing" brand campaign featuring androgynous models dressed in bold, brightly colored outfits with slogans, "create exuberant," "live vivid," "delete ordinary," and "break moulds."

"Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad. Shouldn’t they have learned a lesson from Bud Lite, which went Woke and essentially destroyed, in a short campaign, the Company," he added.

Trump then took a swipe at Taylor Swift, whom he described as a "woke singer."

“Just look at woke singer Taylor Swift. Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!), she was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT,” he said.

Trump's comments came after Sweeney's records revealed that she registered as a Republican voter in Florida before Trump was elected the 47th president of the US last year, according to media outlets like Buzzfeed, PEOPLE, and The Guardian.

Sweeney's controversial denim ad

American Eagle launched its brand campaign, "Sydney Sweeney has a great jeans," on July 23. In the promo video, she is seen wearing denim overalls, saying, "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color."

"My jeans are blue," she continued.

In another promo on Instagram, Sweeney is seen walking toward an AE wall ad featuring her and the tagline "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes." Later in the video, the word "Genes" is crossed out and replaced with "Jeans."

Some social media users are outraged, saying the wordplay of the tagline "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," coupled with her blue eyes and blonde hair, has racial undertones. Some said the campaign promotes "white supremacy" and "eugenics" while others have called it "sterile," a sign of "regression" or simply "rage bait."

Many others, however, have applauded the campaign, posting comments like "woke is broke!" and "culture shift!"

Responding to the backlash, American Eagle stressed in its Aug. 2 statement that the campaign "is and always about the jeans."

"We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way," it added. "Great jeans look good on everyone." (with reports from AFP)
