A sequel to the classic romantic-comedy film My Best Friend's Wedding is in the works nearly 30 years after the original film's release.

Entertainment outlet Variety reported that Sony Pictures is currently developing the sequel. Celine Song, known for her works in Past Lives and Materialists, has been tapped as the screenwriter.

More details, including the plot and cast, have yet to be revealed.

This came after the original film star, Dermot Mulroney, teased about a sequel to the 1997 film in The New York Post.

The original film starred Julia Roberts (as Julianne Potter) and Mulroney (as Michael O'Neal), longtime best friends who made a pact to marry each other if they remain unmarried at age 28. However, when Roberts' character realized her feelings towards her best friend, who is about to marry someone else, she attempts to steal him back a few days before the wedding.

Other cast members of the original film include Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett, Carrie Preston, and Philip Bosco.

My Best Friend’s Wedding was a box office hit upon its release in 1997, ranking as the ninth-highest-grossing domestic release of the year, per Variety. It earned three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture for Musical or Comedy and an Oscar nod for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.
