The award-winning coming-of-age rock musical Spring Awakening is arriving in the Philippines next year.
Manila-based theater company The Sandbox Collective on Facebook announced it's kicking off its 2026 season with Spring Awakening in February at the Proscenium Theater in Makati.
"[T]his electrifying fusion of rock, rebellion, and raw emotion will shake Manila to its core!" the company said.
Andrei Pamintuan will serve as director, while Ejay Yatco is the musical director.
The Sandbox Collective also announced open auditions on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Details can be found on its website.
Based on the 1891 German play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening made its off-Broadway debut in 2006. The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, considered the highest achievement in theater, for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score, and Featured Actor.
The musical follows a group of teenagers as they navigate their sexuality at a time when it's still widely considered taboo.
Steven Sater wrote the book and lyrics, while Duncan Sheik provided the music.
The Sandbox Collective was founded in 2014. According to its website, the company aims to bring "new, groundbreaking and cutting-edge theatrical work."
Its productions include Dani Girl, No Filter 1 & 2, The Imaginarium Festival, The Pillowman, The Boy in the Bathroom, The Glass Menagerie, Himala: Isang Musikal, Lungs, Every Brilliant Thing, and Bawat Bonggang Bagay.
