Part of plane wing breaks off mid-air
A portion of a Delta Airlines plane wing broke off in the middle of the flight.
According to a report by NBC affiliate KXAN, Delta flight 1893 was bound for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport from Orlando International on Tuesday, Aug. 19 when a portion of the plane's left wing broke off before landing.
“After DL 1893 landed safely and without incident in Austin, it was observed that a portion of the left wing’s flap was not in place,” a Delta spokesperson told the outlet.
Shanila Arif, a passenger on the flight, told CNN that they noticed something had broken away from the back of the wing.
“We felt it was bad turbulence. The plane was shaking,” Arif said. “The lady in front of us opened the window and told us it is broken. I opened the window and got scared.”
In a video recorded by Arif, provided to international outlets, the detached part of the flap was seen dangling mid-flight at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, per KXAN.
The airline said that the plane was carrying six crew members and 62 customers. They added that Boeing 737 had landed safely and was removed from service for maintenance. No one was injured in the incident.
”We apologize to our customers for their experience as nothing is more important than the safety of our people and customers,” it added.
