Jo Yu-ri of 'Squid Game' and Son Ye-jin of 'Crash Landing on You' to star in new Netflix drama
Exciting news, K-drama fans! Netflix announced that they are currently developing a new K-pop-centered drama series that will be led by Son Ye-jin of Crash Landing on You and Jo Yu-ri of Squid Game.
Titled Variety, the show will be directed and written by Kim Yong-hoon, who is known for the acclaimed series Mask Girl and the film Beasts Clawing at Straws.
The story centers on the "fierce desires and ambitions of people within the glamorous world of K-pop," per Netflix's news release.
Ye-jin will play the role of Se-eun, a powerful entertainment executive in South Korea who is described to be "ambitious, glamorous, and exceptionally skilled at her job."
"Determined to make tough decisions and risk everything for the revival of the idol group she personally created, she navigates overwhelming emotions in many unexpected situations," the premise read.
Meanwhile, Yu-ri will portray an obsessive fan who will do whatever it takes to meet her favorite idol. The story promises to unfold her character "through a deep and conflicting mix of love, hate, and fierce devotion."
Along with the announcement, Netflix Korea also shared on Instagram pictures of Ye-jin and Yu-ri doing a script-reading session. They also posed for a snap together with Yong-hoon.
Ye-jin is known for starring in the hit series Crash Landing on You, where she similarly portrayed a successful CEO and chaebol heiress opposite her reel-to-real partner, Hyun Bin.
Aside from this, she has also starred in other high-profile films and television dramas, such as A Moment to Remember, Something in the Rain, and Be with You.
On the other hand, Yu-ri is relatively new to acting, having made her debut in the 2022 web series Mimicus before gaining widespread recognition for her role in the second and third seasons of Squid Game.
She initially rose to fame as a former member of the South Korean–Japanese girl group Iz*One.
Additional cast members as well as the premiere date of Variety have yet to be revealed.
