Russian actress dies after being swept away by giant wave while doing yoga on rocky cliff
A Russian actress was swept to her death by a powerful wave while she was meditating on a rocky cliff in Thailand.
Multiple media outlets including Fox News reported that the 24-year-old woman identified as Kamilla Beliatskaya was on vacation in Koh Samui, Thailand over the weekend when the tragic incident happened.
In CCTV footage, Kamilla was seen arriving in a red car at the Laad Koh viewpoint parking in the afternoon. She later grabbed her pink yoga mat before going to the rocky cliff below the viewpoint by herself.
The 24-year-old was later seen in a separate video being swept off the rock by heavy waves.
Witnesses contacted the Bo Phut Police Station at around 1:30 p.m. but Kamilla had gone missing by the time they arrived at the scene approximately 15 minutes later. Only her pink yoga mat was found in the scene.
The New York Post and Khaosod English reported that Kamilla was last spotted struggling in rough waters.
Rescue teams tried to look for Kamilla in the area, but they had to suspend the search after 30 minutes due to worsening wave conditions at the time.
Chaiyaporn Subprasert, head of the Samui Rescue Center, said that there were warning systems placed across the island’s beaches.
“During monsoon season, we constantly warn tourists, especially at high-risk areas like Chaweng and Lamai beaches, where red flags indicate no swimming," he said, as per a Khaosod English report.
"While the incident location isn’t a swimming area but rather a viewpoint for scenery, the victim may have been caught off guard by the unexpected wave surge,” he added.
Kamilla’s body was retrieved the next day after local police received a report from hotel staff about a body that was found on Chaweng Noi Beach. Her boyfriend confirmed her identity.
Access to the rocky area below Laad Koh viewpoint has been closed since the incident.
