Snoop Dogg 'scared' to go to movies after grandson asked about LGBTQ+ relationship in 'Lightyear'
Snoop Dogg recently admitted that Pixar’s 2022 film Lightyear left him “scared to go to the movies” after his grandson asked unexpected questions about the film’s depiction of a same-sex couple.
Speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, the rapper shared that the moment “threw him for a loop” as he struggled to answer his grandson’s questions about the story.
According to Snoop, the issue came up during a scene showing two women raising a child together.
His grandson immediately turned to him with curiosity. “He’s like, ‘Papa Snoop? How can she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’”
The rapper recalled thinking, “Oh s**t, I didn’t come in for this s**t. I just came to watch the g*****n movie.'”
“It f****d me up,” he continued. “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s**t that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
Lightyear, starring Chris Evans as Toy Story's Buzz, was notable for featuring one of Disney and Pixar’s most visible LGBTQ+ characters and for including its first depiction of a same-sex kiss in a movie.
The scene became a point of contention within Pixar, as reports indicated that executives considered cutting it. Employees responded with a joint statement to Walt Disney Company leadership, alleging that the executives had restricted portrayals of same-sex affection in movies. The studio reinstated the scene in the final release.
The film was banned in several countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia due to its LGBTQ+ content. However, Disney kept the scene unchanged in its global release.
