Rising baseball star Gustavo Talmare dies at 14

Gustavo Talmare, a 14-year-old baseball prospect, has died.

ESPN Digital reported that Valentín Contreras Núñez of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League as well as Amaurys Nina, who owns the academy where Talmare trained, confirmed the athlete's death.

Per Nina, he died in a drowning incident in a lagoon in Dominican Republic.

"The boy's body was rescued by a member of one of the Dominican Republic's relief agencies. I can't explain what he was doing in that lagoon, or why he was there, which is 40 minutes from the academy. I don't have the details of how he ended up there, but I know the authorities are investigating the incident," she's quoted as saying.

A preliminary report obtained by ESPN Digital stated that Talmare was discovered lifeless in Laguna del Toro after falling into the lagoon while reaching for a fruit. 

No further details have been disclosed.

Talmare was considered a rising star among baseball fans in his homeland. Per the media outlet, he shone with his excellent performance in the Caribbean Kids Series in 2024, where he was named Most Valuable Player.

He also took part in the U-12 Baseball World Cup in 2023.
